Electronic olfactory

Coven by Andrea Maack

Before everything, before I start to talk about "how Coven does smell" I would like to share my morals and impressions on "what type of fragrance Coven is". I almost finished my sample these days to communicate with this fragrance but seems there is an error so our signals are lost in space. The first question occupied my mine the very first time I tried Coven was: how to wear this? Several testings during outside walking approved that Coven is not a stable outfit for outside mood and it performs so much better inside. OK, now first step is solved but what kind of inner space is proper to fit a fragrance which is uncommonly earthy and loamy that has not the aspects of a random complimentary bringer perfume but in a club of most avantgarde artists? Or precisely, what occasion accepts Coven? Out in a bar of cafe with friends? Home? Office? A formal dress? Or rationally an post modern video art exhibition? A birthday or performance hall where the are much activities? Now to emerge the rightest answer I better go through the scent then you judge....
Andrea Maack is an Icelander visual artist whose arts are combinational elements of fashion and drawing accented by sculptural and graphical illustration.

How interesting we are! My interests in how human (physically and not by brain, the weakest species of the nature) adapts to harsh climatic condition even in the utmost unfavorable weather like Iceland, began when I admitted in architectural faculty and my journey of encountering human and his definitive relations to environment what we call architecture then began.
Borrowing conceptual roots from Iceland, Andrea Maack's Coven have my high interest intensely and I found the same sense of praise to the nature presented in Coven as in turf roofs of Iceland: a traditional primitive solution to confront the severe cold moist of that frozen ground. A turf roof is a thick fertile grass layer with soil or loam on top of wood laths to prevent permeable cold dampness to penetrate and keep the roof strong against the forceful oceanic storms.

But Coven is a not a redundant smell of traditional Icelandic flute and strings melody coming from nowhere beyond melancholic depression of dense fogs that recall witches and folk fables of ruthless Viking warriors. Not even an olfactory equivalence for Björk's music. It (if it's gonna be compared to a musical equality) is reminiscent of type of music conducted by a bunch of most professional synthesizers and most artistic musicians; maybe Massive Attack and Archive have tracks completely fit to Coven which is, by this classification, a post modern definition of nature. Its vibrant and bravely combined reminiscence of the andisolic lands.
The first words of Coven instantly imitates the smell of wet previously rain washed mulchy fertile tincture with type of animalic/camphorous soft reeking yet intriguing aroma imparted in every aspect of it. This twilight dark, electronic, acrid austere uncommon gray green grass aura comes from bizarre omen soil that is charged with troublesome feel of faunal nuances. Sort of strange well made synthetic leafy saline grass collaborating with crisp spicy booze that in overall has olfactive features of tonic water and swamp mud together.

Echos of ozonic frosty oakmoss smudges the basenotes of the soil headed fragrance into fresh gray extraordinary greenness. The boozy notes is still projecting but so pale, so as spices. Soil tincture vibe is now turned into bizarre natural vibe by which Lush perfumes are famous.
With only few notes Coven is a minimal elemental and descriptive masterpiece that could also be considered in extension to Nu_Be elemental project of seven basic substances to form the world. The power point of this frabjous fragrance is its unidentified presentation of soil tincture. Although my benchmark for soil smell is set by Christopher Brosius' creations for his CB I Hate Perfume and Demeter perfumes, I'm totally captured by the way Coven presents it.
Surprisingly and admirably Coven has strong longevity up to 7 hours on my skin and a bit higher than moderate sillage which is enough for its punchy presence.
